They allow mobility, protection and temperature control. This makes them a very important part of your dog’s anatomy. So how do you keep your pup’s paws and toe beans feeling top notch?

Here are some ways you can care for your pet’s paws.

  1. Check them in a regular basis. I like to do it when I bring my Pupp in from potty time. Sometimes he gets thorns mud/dirt, even pebbles. And I’m always afraid he’s gonna get glass stuck between his toe beans.
  1. Moisturize! Use a safe and organic moisturizer made for dogs, as they are less likely to be toxic for them when they lick their paws. These moisturizers are designed to soothe and prevent paw pad injuries that can lead to vet visits. Using human lotion can make their paws too soft and sensitive making it difficult for them to walk on asphalt and such.
  1. When walking them, protect them from the elements. I have socks I like to have my Pupp wear when it’s too hot or cold outside. Some people like to use dog shoes and for those that aren’t a fan of either, just make sure they walk their dog when it’s coolest out or when it’s warmest out. Either way, this goes a long way in preventing any injuries to their paw pads.
  1. If you see any minor cuts, treat them as soon as possible. Clean it with an antibacterial solution, apply an antibacterial cream, and wrap it in a light bandage or put a sock on it to prevent them from licking it, preventing it from healing. Deeper cuts should be examined by a veterinarian to ensure stitches and such are not required.
  1. If you leave your pup’s nails to grow too long it can cause them discomfort when walking. Make sure you trim your pup’s nails every 2-4 weeks. But that also depends on your pet’s breed and activity level.
  1. Ease your pet into new activities. They can get injured by just running in your back yard. So ease them into any new exercises and programs that you have in mind for them.
